The Exacta Rater is a PC program that was designed to search through each horse's recent past performances and detect those most likely to figure in an exacta. To rank the horses in terms of their chances, it uses one of three different algorithms, depending on the distance and surface on which the race will be run. For turf routes, it uses an algorithm that emphasizes the speed at which the horse runs the final fraction. In other words, it's closing velocity, V3 or 3Fr in terms of the Sartin Methodology. For sprints (including those on turf), it uses an algorithm that combines the speed over the first and final fractions with Quirin's Speed Points. For dirt routes, it uses an algorithm that is based primarily on Sartin's Average Pace, a combination of speed to the 2nd call and final velocity, with strong emphasis on the Early Pace.
In each case, the program looks at the last three races run by the horse and records the appropriate data from the best of these three races. It then calculates a score for each horse based on that data and ranks the horses from highest to lowest score.
Obviously, you can use this data in many ways. However, we've found boxing the top three horses has brought home some nice exacta prices. Here are some recent scores:
| Date | Track-Race | Exacta Paid |
| 7/20/11 | DMR-2 | 73.00 |
| 7/23/11 | SAR-1 | 145.00 |
| 7/27/11 | DMR-4 | 79.00 |
| 7/29/11 | SAR-5 | 173.00 |
| 8/5/11 | MTH-10 | 288.20 |
| 8/9/11 | DEL-3 | 66.80 |
| 8/9/11 | DEL-5 | 68.60 |
| 8/11/11 | RDX-6 | 56.20 |
| 8/11/11 | EVD-5 | 179.40 |
| 8/12/11 | TDN-3 | 85.20 |
| 8/13/11 | MTH-7 | 112.60 |
| 8/13/11 | DEL-3 | 103.40 |
| 8/13/11 | DEL-5 | 78.80 |
We think that focussing only on the most recent races, and using a different scoring method depending on the type of race is the way to go. The program requires a Past Performance file (*.drf or *.mcp) downloaded from BRIS. It will scan an entire card, or let you pick out only certain races. It gives you a report that looks like this:
Note that the "box the top three" strategy would have caught the 3rd (the 3-2 paid $103.40) and 5th (the 4-7 paid $78.80) races on the above card.
